Abstract

In a world of born digital material, preservation of this content is being realised as important for the future of academic research. Many institutions already have electronic repositories containing many types of digital objects and each of these may vary in its preservation requirements. In this presentation the Preserv2 project looks at the ways in which institutional repositories can be enhanced to support preservation services which are being developed in the digital preservation community. Enhancing storage paradigms leads to repositories such as EPrints being able to use specific storage solutions which are designed for long term storage and retention of objects. Alongside ensuring that the objects are still accessible for years to come, we also have to guarantee that the objects still have tools which can open and display them as they were intended when first produced. We look at tools such as PRONOM and DROID to provide classification and risk analysis services, from which the outputs can be used to provide early indication of risks to the repository administrator.
